The Bongiovi's 2013 Year in Pictures

Career News

2013 was a busy year for us! Lora went back to work. She is working as a Respiratory Therapist at Inova Fairfax Hospital in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Clinic and is really enjoying it. She likes getting to know and help the patients and she enjoys her co-workers. Gabby and Sam have been working hard to pick up the slack on the days Mom works. Rob found out in the spring that he has been selected for promotion to Colonel. Although he won't be pinning on until late next summer, the Air Force moved him to a Colonel's job so they can get the work out of him, even if he isn't getting the extra pay. He's still working in the Pentagon but he is now a Division Chief in the Space Acquisition Directorate on the Secretary of the Air Force's staff. He enjoyed his year working in the Space and Intelligence Office on the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics's staff and misses working with his colleagues there, but he is thoroughly enjoying leading some of the Air Force's top Majors to ensure the nation's launch vehicles and its GPS and missile warning satellite systems have the money and political support they need.

School Update

Sam completed the fourth grade and started the fifth grade this year. He is excelling at school, although he is an 11-year old boy, so he needs a lot of motivating to do his best. On the academic side, he was placed in the advance math class. He was also selected to be a safety patrol, which means he is responsible for getting to school early and staying late to ensure the safety of his fellow schoolmates.

Gabby is a freshman at Robinson Secondary this year and is doing very well. She has very good grades even though she has a very busy schedule (more on that below) and is taking two honors courses. She continues to have great friends and is enjoying being in High School.

Sports and Activities

This was also a big year in the families activities. Gabby was selected for Robinson's Freshman Volleyball team. She had a great time, made new friends, and learned a lot! After the season ended, she decided to try out for a club team and was selected for the Northern Virginia Volleyball Association's 15 year old girls White Team, which looks like it will keep us busy through the rest of this year and into the spring.

Sam kept us busy, too. He made his blue senior belt in Karate, played baseball in both the spring and the fall, and just started basketball. The big news this year was that his fall team won the Fairfax Little League AAA championship game! It was very exciting and all the players made a play to ensure they either advanced to the final game or won it.

In addition to sports, Sam has been active in Cub Scouts. Since he is an "Arrow of Light" scout, this is his last year as a cub scout. He and his den mates have been going on camp outs and to meetings with some of the local boy scout troops so he can decide which one to join when he "bridges" in February. He also went to a week long day camp and spent a week away at the boy scout camp in Goshen, Virginia.

Vacations and Big Events

Finally, we certainly weren't all work and no play this year! In addition to making trips down to Sumerduck to see Lora's Mom and trips to Williamsburg to see Rob's Parents and Grandparents, we managed to squeeze in a few more trips. We spent Spring Break in Panama City Beach, Florida with Rob's sister, her kids, and his parents. It was a little chilly some days, but we got a few solid beach days in. It was great seeing everyone.

Gabby also completed her religious education and was confirmed in April. It was a great celebration! Also in April, Lora spent a few days in Virginia Beach with her Mom and her Mom's friends. It was a nice break from the hectic household. Over Memorial Day weekend, we traveled to the Chicago area to attend Rob's cousin's wedding and catch up with his Mom's side of the family.

In June, Lora and Rob spent a couple of nights in the Virginia wine country for her birthday and our anniversary. The Virginia wine country has really grown in the past few years and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Then, in July, we met Lora's Mom and her Sister and Brother-in-law for our annual week at Ocean City, Maryland. Lora has been coming to Ocean City since she was a child and Rob has been coming since he met Lora there in 1988, so we always enjoy our visits.

In August, Rob's Grandfather turned 90 years old, and we joined the extended family in Williamsburg for a celebration! We had a great time catching up with everyone and celebrating Grandpa's big birthday. We returned to Williamsburg to celebrate Rob's Parent's birthdays over Labor Day weekend. This was an eventful visit with a trip to Busch Gardens as well as a memorable spill from the inner tube while boating on the river.

We didn't slow down in the fall, attending a Notre Dame football game in South Bend in September and spending a long weekend in Fort Lauderdale at the beginning on November. In Florida, we had two solid beach days, but unfortunately, we also had two solid rain days. Finally, we spent a couple of nights in Gettysburg over Thanksgiving weekend. We had a great time exploring the battlefield with Rob's Parents and Lora's Sister and Brother-in-law.

Desktop CNC machines, although slower and less exact, deal with delicate materials well, such as plastic and foam.
